The CNA students at East Career and Technical Academy (ECTA) painted various pumpkins for the Ronald McDonald House for the kids to enjoy during the month of October. The CNA students painted the pumpkins on Thursday October 19, 2017 after school from 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mrs. Webb, the CNA teacher at ECTA, first delivered the idea to the students in her classes and provided the pumpkins for anyone who wanted to join in on the event.

“The CNA students and I decided that it would be a great project because I’ve seen this done in pediatric hospitals around the country to do a pumpkin painting project for the Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald Mcdonald Room at Sunrise Children’s Hospital,” said Mrs. Webb.

Around 27 pumpkins were painted for the Ronald McDonald House, and there wouldn’t be any painted pumpkins if there wasn’t a little help from Cinthia Qiu, the president of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and Andres Lopez, the president of Student Council. HOSA arranged the paint, while Student Council helped reserve the quad as an area for the CNA students to paint their pumpkins.

The pumpkins were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas, on Monday October 23, 2017. The CNA students painted pumpkins for the Ronald McDonald House because they wanted to bring festive pumpkins to spread cheer and joy around the house for the children and their families to see.

Cinthia Qiu painted a pumpkin herself and she said, “The patients can’t really celebrate Halloween traditionally such as getting candy at their neighbor’s houses. But, they can do it at the hospital where they can celebrate with the pumpkins that we designed and we just wanted to be part of the experience.”

HOSA secretary, Caitlin Hong, also joined in on the fun, and she said, “Staying after school and painting the pumpkins with my friends was my favorite part, and knowing that they [pumpkins] were going to go to a good place and help people.”

The event was the first year CNA student had the opportunity to create beautiful works of art on pumpkins to deliver to the children and their families at the Ronald McDonald House. “I hope that next year we are able to do this again and get more CNA students to come out and paint for the patients. This brings the children joy and happiness, and I would do this event every year because we hope to put smiles on their faces and make them have a festive Halloween,” Mrs. Webb said.
