Students in high school or college have many responsibilities, such as homework, part-time jobs, tests, and other tasks they need to check off from their list of obligations. Stress is the product of students prioritizing and finishing work in order to become successful in school and extracurricular activities.

At East Career and Technical Academy, students who are stressed about homework, tests, extracurricular activities, and other work need to learn how to manage their stress.

*In this article, you are going to learn the many different things a high schooler at ECTA needs to know about stress. Including some tips on what causes stress, stress-management, and what some students at East Tech have to say about stress.

What causes Stress?

   Stress is something everyone has to go through, but for the students at East Tech, with everything going on, stress management can be a difficult task.

Let’s start off with the basics. Stress is the body’s reaction to change. It can be positive or negative. But for lot’s of students at East Tech, stress can be very negative and can take a toll on their academic and social life.

Stressors are what some people refer to as the daily things we face in life that cause stress. Some East Tech stressors a majority of us face would be things like competition, presentations, tests,  homework, dating, extracurricular activities, work, sports, boyfriend/girlfriend problems, relationships with friends,too fast or too slow physical development, high expectations-unfortunatey this list can go on for quite some time, so I will just stop there!  

Stress-Management

Lots of teenagers nowadays either do not know they are stressed, or they are stressed and they don’t do anything about it.

According to the TeenHelp.com website, for boys ” approximately, 25% avoided or refused to deal with their stress, 23% sought ways to distract themselves away from their stress, 17% sought support, and 35% actively tried to reduce their stress” (TeenHelp.com 1).

When it came to  girls, “approximately 19% avoided or refused to deal with their stress, 14 % sought ways to distract themselves away from their stress, 22% sought support, 45% actively tried to remove or reduce their stress” (TeenHelp.com 1).

The teens at ECTA should know that the best way to manage their stress is to learn healthy coping strategies. Writing, reading, drawing, letting your feelings out, and doing something you really enjoy are common ways to cool off and not stress so much. Meditating and focusing on the present  help out a lot, too.

Something that is all the rage these days are squeezable stress balls. “The stress ball prompts you to squeeze and release, which can leave you feeling less tense than you started” (Kate Bratskeir 1).

Here is a good diy recipe for a homemade stress ball:

  1. Blow up the balloon until it is about 4 to 5 inches around, but do not tie it.
  2. Pinch the top of the balloon shut an inch or two from the opening leaving room for the funnel to be inserted into the neck of the balloon.
  3. Fill the top of the funnel with cornstarch using your free hand
  4. Slowly let go where you are pinching the balloon so the cornstarch can slide into the balloon.
  5. Continue adding cornstarch to the funnel until the balloon is filled to a depth of about 3 inches.
  6. Pull up tightly on the opening of the balloon and pinch out any extra air.
  7. Tie the balloon closed as near to the cornstarch as you can. Use scissors to cut off any excess balloon, but don’t cut too close to the knot on the balloon.
  8. Decorate the stress ball with stickers or permanent markers if desired.

Here are some stress-management techniques we have that might help the common high school student dealing with stress. We’ve separated it into two categories: physical, and mental.

Physical:

  • Have a game plan/be organized (agenda, calendar, phone)
  • Meditation 
  • Deep abdominal breathing (Control)
  • Muscle tension/relaxation (Muscle Pains)
  • Exercise
  • Heat relaxes you. A shower is great.
  • Stretching.
  • Message
  • Proper diet
  • Proper sleep (8 hours)
  • Complete something
  • Socialize

Mental:

  • Take one step at a time
  • Keep life simple
  • Crying releases pent up frustration, so does screaming! Scream, Cry, Release!
  • Love your pet
  • Love/Intimacy (BF, Bestie, Family, Parents, Siblings)
  • Serving others. (Empathy for others.)
  • Learn to Laugh
